He won a British Council fellowship in 1992 to study contemporary British poetry at the University of London's Birkbeck College and modern literary theory at Oxford University.

Participated in the International Writers' Residence at Le Chateau de Lavigny, Switzerland in 2006.

He has been invited to the 2007 Ubud Writers & Readers Festival in Bali, Indonesia.

Maranan has won a total of 30 Carlos Palanca literary prizes for his works in English and Filipino in various genres, and was inducted into the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature Hall of Fame in 2000.

He has garnered awards in other competitions such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines literary contest and writing grants, Amado V. Hernandez Playwriting Competition, Institute of National Language poetry competition, Filamore Tabios Sr. Memorial Prize for Poetry, Philippines Free Press Literary Awards, Philippine Graphic Nick Joaquin Literary Awards, and the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY)-Alfrredo Navarro Salanga Writers Prize which he won three years in a row.

His book of translation, Kudaman: Isang Epiko ng Palawan na Inawit ni Usuy (Ateneo Press, with Dr. Nicole Revel McDonald), won a National Book Award in 1992.

From 1993 to 2006, Maranan worked as Foreign Information Officer of the Philippine Embassy in London, and published The Philippine Newsletter.

Before his stint in the diplomatic service, Maranan taught Political Science at the UP College of Arts & Sciences, and graduate courses in Philippine Studies at the UP Asian Center, Diliman, Quezon City.

A native of Bauan, Batangas, he grew up in Baguio City and had his elementary and high school education.

He later went to the University of the Philippines where he finished his bachelor's degree in Foreign Service and his masteral course work in Political Science and Philippine Studies.

He is an active member of the newly formed Baguio Writers Group.

A REPLY TO A MIDLAND COURIER EDITORIAL

On July 26, 2009, the MIDLAND COURIER EDITORIAL, released a Column entitled PLAYING GOD.

Unfortunately the column stated facts which were merely one sided, imbalanced and untruthful. The side of SLU Hospital of the Sacred Heart was not heard, since the Editor did not investigate, verify or give the SLU Hospital the opportunity to explain its side of the story.

The Editorial stated that, “an order reportedly from the Hospital Administrator and an Assistant Chief Nurse was laid down not to admit the patient coming from BGH-referring to Magnolia.” This is absolutely not true. The hospital policy is to admit patients seeking admission to the SLU Hospital. In fact patient Magnolia Garcia was admitted and attended to immediately and promptly in the SLU Hospital Emergency Room and the proper treatment and care given despite the information earlier relayed to the Medical Staff of BGH that no mechanical ventilator was available.

The mechanical ventilator is obviously more advantageous than that of an Ambu bag, which the Editor of Midland Courier may not know. Mechanical ventilators provide a number of advantages over other types of ventilatory support. Mechanical ventilation is lightweight and compact which makes it convenient and very easy to use. Secondly, they are an improvement over the bag-valve device (Ambubag) in maintaining minute volume. The mechanical ventilation system is also able to endure extreme temperatures ranging from 30 degrees Fahrenheit to 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Another advantage of mechanical ventilation is that, it is typically equipped with both an adjustable ventilatory rate and tidal volume. This will allow the machine to function intermittently, reverting to controlled mechanical ventilation in patients who are not breathing.

The SLU Emergency Room Staff explained that since Pines City Doctors Hospital, a nearby hospital had an available Mechanical Ventilator ready for use, it was prudent and highly recommendable that it would be to the best interest of the patient that she be instead transferred to the said Hospital. Since the accompanying relatives consented to the recommendation, patient was transferred via the SLU-HSH ambulance accompanied by the Medical Staff to the Pines City Doctors Hospital where she was immediately attended to.

We reaffirm our commitment to provide the highest quality medical care and management for the people of the Cordilleras upholding its tradition of excellent medical services reflective of the Christian value of selfless sharing.
We hope this explanation puts close the issues in this case.

The Northern Luzon Research Journal is accepting manuscripts for its third volume (2009), with the deadline of submissions set on 30 October 2009.

The NLR Journal is a peer-reviewed, interuniversity publication for applied researches and development studies. It aims to gather and feature articles that bear relevance to socio-cultural, political, economic, health, and environmental issues affecting the regions of Northern Luzon. It is distributed nationwide among journal-exchange partner HEIs as well as locally among LGUs, state line agencies, NGOs, and other sectoral organizations.

As an academic journal, it upholds a standard of scholarship through a double-blind referee system involving reviewers from various disciplines nationwide. But unlike most refereed journals at the national level, the NLR Journal limits itself to studies focusing on Northern Luzon and, in so doing, responds to the demand of local researchers, scholars, policy-makers, development workers, and other stakeholders for an accessible yet quality applied and development-oriented research publication.

He offered to donate the gold medal through the Mandaue Council who formally accepted it and drafted rules to govern the selection. Igorot woman, mother, and migrant leader, Flora Baniaga-Belinan exemplifies Pinay power that is woven on the loom of the women’s struggle for empowerment, justice and equality.

Flora started as an organizer of the urban poor in Baguio City. Unemployed after graduation, she joined the Urban Poor Assistance Center upon the invitation of an activist uncle. Hence, the beginning of her social involvement.

Flora became very active in her engagements as a social worker. In the course of her organizing work, she immersed with the urban poor and was exposed to their gut issues as well as to the plight of other marginalized sectors. Eventually, she participated in various protest actions and other community activities. Then came her resolve to be part of the movement for social transformation at a time when the political and economic crisis in the country continued to worsen under the crumbling Marcos dictatorship.

Organizing changed many aspects of Flora’s life. In fact, it paved the way for her meeting with Paul Belinan, her husband of 25 years. Paul was also from Sagada but he only met Flora in Baguio. An advocate of workers’ rights, he has been working for the Cordillera Labor Center for quite a long time already.

Flora and her husband were committed to their social causes but it was hard for them to support the needs of their family from their limited income. Confronted with the urgent need to survive, Flora made the difficult decision of leaving her family to work as a domestic helper in Hong Kong for 12 years.

However, Flora unwaveringly pursued organizing work in Hong Kong. She founded and headed the Pinatud A Saleng Ti Umili (organization of domestic workers from Cordillera) even as she was still adjusting in the foreign land. She also served as an adviser to the Cordillera Alliance-Hong Kong.

Tirelessly, she gathered and organized fellow OFWs. They would maintain communication through the phone and meet at a common place every weekend. Amidst her preoccupation, she still found time to do volunteer work for a counseling institution for distressed OFWs.

Under the banner of Migrante International, Flora was at the forefront of various major advocacies and struggles for the rights and welfare of migrants, especially of women Filipino workers, in Hong Kong. Among these were the victorious campaigns between 1998 and 2003 to stop wage cuts and to scrap state exactions such as authentication fees. At present, together with Filipino migrant groups, she is vigorously campaigning for the scrapping of the new POEA Guidelines which seek to collect more fees and not to protect domestic workers.

Flora has always stood staunchly against violence perpetrated on women migrants including rape and other forms of sexual abuse, maltreatment, and trafficking. She is now taking the lead in the campaign for justice for OFW victims of violence and government criminal neglect.

While in Hong Kong, Flora also promoted indigenous peoples’ rights to land, life, and resources, firmly opposing policies and projects in the homefront that particularly cause the destruction of the environment and exploitation of women indigenous peoples and children.

In 2005, she returned home and founded the Migrante Chapter in Metro Baguio. Recently, she was elected deputy secretary-general for external affairs of GWP.

For her steadfast stance and commitment to promote and defend the rights and welfare of women migrant workers, she was nominated as one of the top three standard bearers of GWP, joining Mindanaoan educator Luz Ilagan and Rep. Liza Maza.

Father Dave Dean Capucao received three diplomas after the defence last wednesday (June 10, 2009): a PhD from the Radboud University in Nijmegen-The Netherlands, an STD (Doctor of Sacred Theology) from the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium), and a PhD from the Catholic University of Louvain.

The title of his dissertation is: Religion and Ethnocentrism: an empirical-theological study of the effects of religious attitudes on the attitudes towards minorities among Catholics in the Netherlands.

Mountain Province is a landlocked province of the Philippines in the Cordillera Administrative Region in Luzon. Its capital is Bontoc and borders, clockwise from the south, Ifugao, Benguet, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Kalinga, and Isabela.

Mountain Province is the full name of the province and is sometimes incorrectly named just Mountain in some foreign references. The name is also incorrectly shortened by locals to Mt. Province, which in turn is read by native Anglophones as "Mount Province". The province is named that way because it is found in the Cordillera Central mountain range of north central Luzon.

Mountain Province was also the name of the historical province that included most of the current Cordillera provinces. This old province was established by the Americans in 1908 and was later split in 1966 into Mountain Province, Benguet, Kalinga-Apayao and Ifugao.

The Ang Kapatiran Party (AKP), a national political party accredited by the Commission on Elections, named Olongapo City Councilor John Carlos “JC” de los Reyes as its presidential candidate for 2010. JC, who will turn 40 on February 14 next year, was unanimously selected by the Party’s national electoral committee from among 37 names/personalities nominated by both Party members and the general public.

JC delos Reyes has a degree in Theology from the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio, USA, a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of the Philippines, and a Law degree from St. Louis University in Baguio City. He obtained his primary and secondary education from the Ateneo de Manila and De La Salle – Zobel, respectively. He is married to Dunia Valenzuela. They have three children.

He is lead animator of Solidarity Philippines, a movement that pro-actively advances the social justice agenda of the Church. He is also executive director of Breaking the Yoke of Poverty Foundation, which oversees the Jubilee Homes for the Poor, a housing project for 60 families in Olongapo City.

As human rights advocate, he has raised issues on extrajudicial killings. He has openly criticized Hanjin in Subic over worker’s rights violations, urging government to prioritize the dignity of the Filipino worker.

He has opposed the reproductive health code, saying it is a dictated and imperialist law that muddles women’s rights. He is also against the establishment of Ocean 9 Casino in Subic and the commissioning of the Bataan Nuclear Plant.

He has been an organizer of Kapatiran sa Pangkalahatang Kabutihan (KPK) as early as 1998 and worked for the Comelec accreditation of AKP in 2004. He was the lone winner of AKP in 2007 when the Party fielded 30 candidates for national and local positions.

AKP is confident that principle- and platform-based politics, personified by JC delos Reyes, will destroy the paradigm of big-money and popularity politics. The nation, with the youth at the forefront, will experience a new and promising beginning - asserting the Party’s call for prophetic politics of personal and social transformation.

The open nomination system will also be adopted for the Party’s subsequent search for candidates for vice president, senators, and other local elective positions, details of which will be announced soon.

Amy Nielsen was raised in the Philippines and earned a bachelor's degree in English from Saint Louis University, Baguio City. She worked in a youth center in different capacities giving her national and international experiences with young people, before working as Executive Staff in an importer/distributor company in Manila. She lives in Denmark with her Danish husband and is writing sequel to Victor and the Sun Orb while working full-time at Novo Nordisk A/S.

About the Book

Amy Nielsen together with her husband Steffen Nielsen has lived in Kalundborg for 3 years now. They met in Copenhagen while Amy was visiting relatives in Denmark.

She has a bachelor's degree from Saint Louis University in Baguio City, Philippines, and currently works in Novo in Kalundborg, and does her writing during weekends.

The fantasy novel's main character, Victor, should enjoy a carefree life, but from an early age, he finds himself very busy. He must learn complex magic and martial arts, and is taught how to live in a human world.

It's all because his parents, King Godfred and Queen Magenta know of a curse, which is casted on the son upon his birth by a dark, hooded figure with eyes that burns like coal. On his thirteenth birthday, their beloved son will leave the fantasy kingdom of Solandia, loose his mortality and live with humans.

In order to be free from the spell, Victor must retrieve the mystical sun orb, a magical power, which has fell in the hands of the dark, hooded figure. Challenging him breaks out war between the forces of light and darkness. The good fairies against the bad fairies.

Cirilo F. Bautista (1941-) is a multi-awarded Filipino poet, fictionist, critic and writer of nonfiction. He received his basic education from Legarda Elementary School (1st Honorable Mention, 1954) and Mapa High School (Valedictorian, 1959). He received his degrees in AB Literature from the University of Santo Tomas (magna cum laude, 1963), MA Literature from St. Louis University, Baguio City (magna cum laude, 1968), and Doctor of Arts in Language and Literature from De La Salle University-Manila (1990). He received a fellowship to attend the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa (1968-1969) and was awarded an honorary degree—the only Filipino to have been so honored there.

Bautista taught creative writing and literature at St. Louis University (1963-1968) and the University of Santo Tomas (1969-1970) before moving to De La Salle University-Manila in 1970. He is also a co-founding member of the Philippine Literary Arts Council (PLAC) and a member of the Manila Critics Circle, Philippine Center of International PEN and the Philippine Writers Academy.

Bautista has also received Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards (for poetry, fiction and essay in English and Filipino) as well as Philippines Free Press Awards for Fiction, National Book Awards from the Manila Critics Circle, Gawad Balagtas from the Unyon ng mga Manunulat ng Pilipinas, the Pablo Roman Prize for the Novel, and the highest accolades from the City of Manila, Quezon City and Iligan City.

Bautista was hailed in 1993 as Makata ng Taon by the Komisyon ng mga Wika ng Pilipinas for winning the poetry contest sponsored by the government. The last part of his epic trilogy The Trilogy of Saint Lazarus, entitled Sunlight on Broken Stones, won the Centennial Prize for the epic in 1998. He was an exchange professor in Waseda University and Ohio University. He became an Honorary Fellow in Creative Writing at the University of Iowa in 1969, and was the first recipient of a British Council fellowship as a creative writer at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1987.

Bautista works include Boneyard Breaking, Sugat ng Salita, The Archipelago, Telex Moon, Summer Suns, Charts, The Cave and Other Poems, Kirot ng Kataga, and Bullets and Roses: The Poetry of Amado V. Hernandez. His novel Galaw ng Asoge was published by the University of Santo Tomas Press in 2004. His latest book, Believe and Betray: New and Collected Poems, appeared in 2006, published by De La Salle University Press.

His poems have appeared in major literary journals, papers, and magazines in the Philippines and in anthologies published in the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, China, Romania, Hong Kong, Germany and Malaysia.
